Final Day: Wailua Falls and Wiamea Canyon

I bet most of you are sick and tired of reading about our trip. Well...this is the last post! We kept our last day pretty laid back. We spent the morning packing, checked out of our hotel, then hit the road. Our first stop was Wailua Falls. They were only a few miles from our hotel, so we decided to stop on our way to Wiamea Canyon. Most waterfalls on Kauai are only accessible by helicopter, or are located on private land. These falls were located right off the road and there was no hiking involved (definitely a plus!). The falls were gorgeous!

You can't really tell in the pictures, but the falls actually drop in three different segments, not just two.

I don't know why it looks like I have no eyebrows in this picture!

After the falls, we grabbed a quick bite to eat and then headed towards Waimea Canyon. The drive over to the south shore is a little bizarre. The scenery goes from lush and green, to dry and red! When we first entered the canyon, I thought we had been time warped to southern Utah!

The red dirt and dry trees reminded me of my college days.

Waimea Canyon has been described (I think by Mark Twain) as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. And from looking at the pictures you can see why!
Us at one of the lookouts

The Canyon looks a lot like the Grand Canyon, the only difference is that Waimea is
smaller and a bit greener.
The wild chickens in Hawaii crack me up! They are EVERYWHERE!

We stopped at a lookout point that looked in the opposite direction of the canyon. In the distance you can see the island of Niihau. It is the smallest inhabited Hawaiian Island. It is privately owned, and a small native Hawaiian population of about 150-200 live there. We did some research on the island while we were there and discovered that the Robinson family owns it. Rob's family owns property in Hawaii and their name happens to be Robinson. We are still looking into it to find out if it is Rob's relatives that own the island, or some other Robinson Family :)

After looking at all there was to see in the Canyon, we decided to grab a Hawaiian Ice and head back to the East Shore. It was amazing once again to notice the climate change. When we left Waimea Canyon, the temperature gauge in our car said 91 degrees, and it was a dry heat! By the time we hit the southeast side by Poipu, the temperature had dropped to 79 and you could feel the moisture in the air. So bizarre!

As you can see, I was a little bored on the drive back. I had convertible hair the whole trip! Once we made it back to the East Shore, we stopped at Lydgate Beach to relax and kill some time. It was quite relaxing to watch the waves and catch up on some reading. Once the sun started going down we decided to go freshen up at our hotel and grab a quick bite before headed to the airport. We decided to grab dinner at our favorite little Hawaiian BBQ stand one last time...and it did not disappoint! Yum! I am craving some teriyaki beef just thinking about it!

Although we were sad to leave paradise, it was nice to come home! Rob and I were lucky and got a few extra days to relax before the boys got home. My parents had taken them up to Bear Lake for a short little trip. It was extremely nice to get unpacked and recover from jet lag before taking on the roll of a full time mom again! Thanks again to everyone that helped us with the boys and Shera while we were gone! And a special thanks to my wonderful husband for planning the whole trip! It was amazing! I love you babe!
